TikTok will make millions of songs available again on the platform after settling a disagreement with Universal Music Group over royalties.

What preceded: In late January, Universal came out with news that it would remove songs by their artists from the app TikTok. Although it initially remained a threat, a while later no songs from the music giant could be found. These included songs by major stars such as Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish, as well as Belgian artists.

In the news: Universal and TikTok have come to an agreement on the royalties to be paid for the music. That became known this week.

  • Users can again create videos featuring music by popular artists such as Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande.
  • The new agreement promises "enhanced fees" for artists, but exact amounts are not known.
  • TikTok will bring Universal's music back to the platform within two weeks, including restoring audio in previously muted videos.
  • Shou Zi Chew, the boss of TikTok, has already welcomed the new partnership. "Music is an important part of TikTok. We are happy to move forward again together with Universal Music Group," he sounded in a statement.

AI

  • The two companies stated that they are "working together to protect human art" in the face of artificial intelligence (AI).
  • Unauthorized AI-generated music will disappear from the platform. That way, the efforts of artists and songwriters will be more recognized.
